e-Scooter crash takes life of San Jose State football player

San Jose State is mourning the death of a football player who was struck and killed by a school bus while he was riding his electric scooter. The accident took place just a few blocks from the campus. Reports state that the player has been identified as Camden McWright.

According to reports, McWright was on an electric scooter when he collided with a San Jose Unified School District bus near the intersection of 10th and Reed Streets.

At the time of the accident, 14 school children were aboard the bus, which was traveling on S. 10th Street. According to police, the bus was in the legal right of way, turning on a green light onto Reed Street, when McWright’s Lime scooter collided with it.

Electric scooter accidents have become an increasing concern among city and state officials as well as the general public.

According to a 2019 National Association of City Transportation Officials (NATCO), people took 136 million trips on shared bikes and scooters, a 60% increase from 2018. 2019 was a particularly deadly year for pedestrians, cyclists, and shared micro mobility riders with at least 18 shared scooter fatalities and 2 bike share fatalities.

The rapid rise has been led by startup companies such as Lime and Bird, which were both established in 2017.

McWright played football for St. Genevieve High School in Los Angeles, near his hometown of Sylmar. He was a freshman at San Jose State University.
